GAME RECAP

Doug Strange's two-out, two-run double snapped an eighth-inning tie and lifted the Seattle Mariners past the New York Yankees, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game series.

With Seattle trailing by a run in the seventh, Mark Whiten made his Mariners' debut and lined a pitch into the right-field bleachers, tying the score.

"He had a nice debut," Seattle manager Lou Pinella said. "Stroking one into the seats for us, to tie the game in the seventh inning."

In the eighth, Seattle had runners at first and second with two out against former Mariners reliever Jeff Nelson.

Strange worked the count full before lining a pitch into the gap in left-center, scoring both runners for a 6-4 lead.

After Darryl Strawberry's RBI double brought the Yankees within a run in the bottom of the eighth, pinch-hitter Tim Raines bounced weakly to first to end the threat. New York had the tying run on base in the ninth after Wade Boggs singled, but Norm Charlton got Paul O'Neill to pop out and Mike Jackson came on to strike out Cecil Fielder for his fifth save.

Ex-Yankee Sterling Hitchcock (12-5) notched the victory, allowing five runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings with four walks and five strikeouts. He's 2-1 this season against his former teammates.

"He struggled early with his command and got behind on the hitters," said Pinella. "He did the same as last start. He pitched well for us and had a fine game there on."

Dale Polley (1-1), who hit Ken Griffey Junior with one out in the eighth, took the loss.

Seattle won for just the second time in its last 10 games, while the Yankees lost for the fifth time in their last seven games. The Mariners have won four of the six meetings between the teams, including two of three in New York.

"Well, this is one that we let slip away," New York manager Joe Torre. "We're giving too much away. We're not there yet. The team needs to be playing with more confidence. The first inning was our opportunity. After that, they didn't give anything. We got three but just couldn't hold it."

Five consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly by Mariano Duncan staked the Yankees to a 3-0. Run-scoring singles by O'Neill and Fielder highlighted the inning which saw the first five batters reach base.

The Mariners capitalized on a break in the fourth to tie the score. After a bases-loaded walk to Griffey, Yankees left fielder Gerald Williams, among the best defensive outfielders in the league, lost a ball in the lights, allowing the tying runs to score.

New York took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when former Mariner Tino Martinez, who was traded for Hitchcock, singled home Derek Jeter.
